Description

29 Mansionhouse Road, The Grange, Edinburgh, is a villa dated 1848, as indicated by the datestone in the porch pediment. It is a single-storey building with a raised basement and a later attic, featuring a symmetrical rectangular plan with three bays. The exterior is constructed of sandstone rubble, with stugged ashlar and droved dressings on the entrance elevation. A raised band course separates the basement from the rest of the building, topped with a blocking course.

The entrance elevation features a central porch with a broken pediment supported by squared detached piers. It has a boarded soffit and stone steps leading up to a panelled door, which is topped by a plate glass fanlight. On either side of the porch, there are single windows at both the basement and ground floors, as well as single canted dormer windows on the roof.

On the south and north elevations, there is a ground floor window that includes a decorative iron guard. The villa has 12-pane sash and case windows, with additional inner glazing. The roof is made of grey slate and has a double pitch, with ashlar coped gables and end stacks that feature moulded octagonal cans.

The interior was not seen in 1990. There is a pedestrian gateway to the south, a garage built in 1827 to the north, and a further addition at the rear of the garage. A low retaining wall is present along the street, although the original ironwork is missing.
