Description

59 Grange Road is a double villa built around 1866. It is a two-storey, four-bay structure with a symmetrical rectangular plan. The exterior is made of squared and snecked sandstone rubble, with lightly stugged ashlar on the south elevation. The villa features paired Corinthian columns that flank and separate the two central bays on both the ground and first floors. It has a base course, an acanthus-leaf frieze, a cornice, a blocking course, and round-arched windows with pilaster mullions and stop-chamfered reveals.

On the south (entrance) elevation, there are central entrance bays that are slightly advanced, with the same columns and a dividing entablature between the floors. The round-arched doorways have panelled doors and plate glass fanlights, with single windows above. Full-height, four-light canted windows with dividing cornices are located on the outer left and right sides. There is also a single-storey, flat-roofed double garage added in 1982, which is connected to a pedestrian gateway to the west.

The west elevation has a single window on the first floor, while the east elevation features two single windows on the first floor. The north elevation was not seen in 1990. The villa has plate glass sash and case windows, with replacements at No 59, and 4-pane sash and case windows on the central first floor bays of the south elevation. The roof is covered with grey slate and has a piended design, with lead flashing and four shouldered and corniced wallhead stacks, some of which have moulded octagonal cans.

The interiors were not seen in 1990. The property is enclosed by a low coped boundary wall along the street, which has remnants of cast-iron railings at the center and rises to approximately 2 meters to the west, curving into Mansionhouse Road to the east.
