Isabella Cottage, 31 Mansionhouse Road, The Grange, Edinburgh

Isabella Cottage, located at 31 Mansionhouse Road in The Grange, Edinburgh, dates from around 1848. It is a single-storey villa with a raised basement and a symmetrical rectangular plan, featuring three bays. The exterior is constructed from sandstone rubble, with stugged ashlar and raised droved margins on the entrance elevation, which also includes a moulded cornice and a blocking course.

The entrance elevation has a central doorpiece adorned with polished ashlar pilasters and an entablature. The upper part of the door is panelled with etched glass and features a letterbox fanlight. There are single windows flanking the door and one to the right at both the basement and ground floor levels.

The south elevation is blank rubble and has an adjoining conservatory that was converted into a garage in 1929. The north elevation is also blank rubble.

The cottage features 12-pane sash and case windows and has a grey slate piended roof with end stacks that have moulded octagonal cans.

The interior was not seen in 1990. There is a pedestrian gateway attached to the north side, with a low retaining wall to the street that lacks its original ironwork. The gatepiers are droved and capped.
