Description
Northwood House is a villa dating from around 1870, built on a rectangular plan with later additions to the west. It is constructed of squared and snecked sandstone, with contrasting polished ashlar dressings. The exterior features a base course, a dividing band, a first-floor cill course, and eaves courses. There is a cornice, segmental-arched to create pediments above the first-floor windows to the east and south, with architraved windows and round-headed dormers with swept piend roofs to the south. Long and short quoins are also visible.
The east-facing elevation, overlooking Lauder Road and the main entrance, has a doorpiece with an architraved surround, panelled pilasters with carved capitals, an entablature, a two-leaf panelled door, and a small-pane fanlight. A small, apron-shaped segmental-arched window with leaded glass is positioned above the door, flanked by similarly detailed pilasters. A small decorative tablet is set into the eaves above. Single corniced windows are situated in the flanking bays.
The south-facing garden elevation is three bays wide. The central bay projects above the eaves line, featuring pilaster-flanked and corniced tripartite windows, round-headed at the first floor. A decorative tablet flanks a bipartite dormer set into a pyramidal roof. Single windows are present on each floor to the outer right, with the ground-floor window being corniced. A single dormer sits above. A lean-to conservatory is located on the ground floor to the outer left, with a single window above it and another dormer. A single-storey and attic service wing is further recessed, with a bipartite dormer breaking the wallhead.
The north-facing elevation, towards Dick Place, central advanced bay with two recessed entrances at ground floor level. A bipartite leaded stair window is positioned above. A round-headed, piend-roofed dormer is also present. Single windows are found in the remaining bays, with those to the left visible by the re-entrant angle. A piend-roofed service wing extends to the outer right, featuring a flat-roofed extension and an advanced tripartite window facing north, and a piend-roofed bipartite dormer recessed above.
The windows are plate glass sash and case windows. The roof is covered in grey slate, piended in style, with a box dormer on the north side. Corniced wallhead stacks and moulded octagonal cans are present.
The interior was not inspected in 1990.
High, coped rubble boundary and mutual walls enclose the property. Pedestrian gateways with slatted detailing are present on Lauder Road and Dick Place, along with carriage gateways to both roads. The Lauder Road gatepiers are panelled ashlar with cornices and semi-circular coping, while the Dick Place gatepiers are ashlar with pyramidal coping.
