Description

Kenneth Mackenzie House, built around 1875, is a two-storey, two-bay Italianate villa located at 27 Lauder Road in Edinburgh. The villa features a rectangular plan, a rooftop tower, a two-storey projecting service wing, and a single-storey service block attached to it. The exterior is constructed of roughly stugged ashlar with polished dressings, and squared and snecked rubble on the east side. It has a base, dividing band, and eaves courses, along with rusticated quoins and segmental-arched windows that have chamfered reveals and a bracketed cornice.

On the west elevation, which serves as the entrance, there is a recessed stone porch on the outer left. This features a segmental-arched doorpiece with lugged and architraved detailing, flanked by pilasters. Above the door is a consoled cornice with leaded coping, and the outer left has channelled quoins. The entrance includes a two-leaf panelled door with a plate glass fanlight above. The outer right bay consists of a canted window at ground level with a pierced balustrade, and a bipartite window at the first floor with a column-mullion that has decorative capitals. Broad channelled pilasters flank this window and break the eaves of the square-section, single-stage ashlar piend-roofed tower. Each face of the tower features a keystoned round-arched tripartite window with pilaster-mullioned blinded arcade, along with blind diminutive arcaded aprons and an entablature. The left bay has a tripartite window in an advanced panel at ground level, with leaded piended coping that rises into the first-floor window, mirroring the detail on the right. There is also an oeil de boeuf dormer with scroll-flanked detailing.

The north elevation includes a single-storey ashlar addition that links 27 Lauder Road to 29 Lauder Road, featuring a single window at the first floor. The south elevation is not described in detail, while the east elevation has a central two-storey projecting service wing with a single-storey extension and another single-storey service wing attached to the outer right, which has two windows at the first floor.

The villa has plate glass sash and case windows, a grey slate piended roof with lead flashing, moulded eaves guttering, and two shouldered and corniced wallhead stacks, along with a gablehead stack at the two-storey service wing. There is a 19th-century dormer on the east side and later dormers on the east and north sides.

The interior was not seen in 1990. The property also features gatepiers and boundary walls, which include two corniced polished ashlar gatepiers with stop-chamfered angles and ashlar coped boundary walls to the south and east, along with low railings along the street.
