Description

This building, located at 54 Fountainhall Road in Edinburgh, dates from around 1885 and is a two-storey, three-bay rectangular villa with an attached service wing. It features squared and snecked rubble construction, with coursed stugged ashlar and polished ashlar dressings on the south (entrance) elevation. The design includes a base course, dividing and eaves cornices, raised long and short quoins, and segmental-arched windows on the first floor, with roll-moulded arrises around the window surrounds.

On the south elevation, there is a central round-arched doorpiece flanked by pilasters and framed by an architrave, featuring a masque keystone and two paterae. Fluted consoles support a cornice above, and there is a decorative stone balustrade. The entrance consists of a two-leaf panelled door with glazed upper panels and a plate glass fanlight above. A raised single window is located on the first floor above the door. To the outer left, there is a full-height canted window, while the outer right has an advanced tripartite window at ground level that rises into a bipartite window on the first floor, adorned with scroll detail at the base.

The west elevation features a timber-framed conservatory with an iron finial at ground level to the outer right, alongside a two-storey service wing to the outer left and three single windows on the first floor.

The villa has plate glass sash and case windows, a grey slate piended roof with lead flashing, moulded eaves guttering, two shouldered and corniced wallhead stacks, and moulded octagonal chimney cans.

The interior was not seen in 1990. The property is complemented by boundary walls and gatepiers, including a low saddlebacked wall along Fountainhall Road that rises to the west, featuring a coped pedestrian gateway and paired coped ashlar gatepiers. To the east, there is a high coped boundary wall that continues into South Lauder Road.
