Description

56 Fountainhall Road is a villa built in 1884 by James Proudfoot. This two-storey, three-bay rectangular-plan building features squared and coursed sandstone with lightly stugged ashlar and polished dressings on the south (entrance) elevation. It has a base and dividing band course, a cornice, long and short raised quoins, basket-arched windows, and roll-moulded arrises to the window surrounds.

On the south elevation, the central entrance has an architraved segmental-arched doorpiece with pilasters, a keystone, carved spandrels, moulded consoles, a cornice, and a blinded balustrade. The deep-set tripartite doorway includes a panelled door and a plate glass fanlight. To the outer right, there is a full-height advanced tripartite window with a dividing cornice, and to the outer left, a full-height canted window also with a dividing cornice.

The east elevation has a flat-roofed garage attached at ground floor and two single windows at the first floor. The west elevation features a full-height canted window with a dividing cornice to the outer left and a single-storey corniced canted bay to the outer right, along with a conservatory attached to the rear.

The villa has plate glass sash and case windows, a grey slate piended roof with lead flashing, three shouldered and corniced stacks, moulded octagonal cans, moulded eaves guttering, and iron finials. The interior was not seen in 1990. There is a low coped boundary wall to the street, rising to the west.
