Description
Claremont, located at 52 Fountainhall Road in Edinburgh, is a villa built around 1878 in the style of Robert Reid Raeburn. This two-storey, three-bay rectangular-plan villa features a two-storey service wing with a piend roof at the rear and is constructed from squared and snecked sandstone with droved ashlar dressings. Architectural details include a base, dividing band, and eaves courses, a stone-bracketed cornice, long and short quoins, and segmental-arched windows with chamfered reveals. The advanced and canted windows have aprons.
The west elevation, which serves as the entrance, has steps leading up to a central ashlar porch supported by two detached Composite columns and two pilasters. This porch holds an entablature and a balustraded balcony above a single window on the first floor. The entrance features a tripartite doorway with a panelled door and a plate glass fanlight. To the outer left, there is a full-height canted window, while the outer right has an advanced tripartite window with a bracketed cornice and lead canopy at the ground floor, along with an advanced bipartite window above.
The north elevation consists of four bays with a recessed wing to the east. It has bipartite windows at both the ground and first floors in the outer left bay, with single windows in the remaining bays except for the first floor inner right. There is a secondary entrance at the ground floor leading to the wing, with two single windows above.
The south elevation also has three bays with a recessed wing to the east. It features a canted window with a cornice and blocking course at the ground floor in the outer left bay, with a bipartite window above. The outer right bay has advanced bipartite windows at both the ground and first floors, and a single window at the centre of the first floor. The recessed wing contains bipartite windows at both floors and a single window flanking to the left between floors.
The east elevation shows a two-storey service wing to the outer right. The villa has plate glass sash and case windows, a grey slate piended roof with lead flashing, four shouldered and deeply corniced stacks, and a truncated stack on the service wing. It also features a six-panel canted dormer on the west side, moulded eaves guttering, and two skylights on the south side.
The interiors were not seen in 1990. The property is complemented by high coped rubble boundary walls along South Lauder Road and Grange Loan, with a coped pedestrian gateway to Grange Loan. There are also two corniced ashlar gatepiers with ball finials at the entrance to South Lauder Road.
