Description

Probably designed by Robert Raeburn around 1875, 11 Ettrick Road is a two-storey and attic L-plan villa. The front facade is built of cream-coloured ashlar, while the side and rear elevations utilize grey sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings. The building features channelled quoins, roll-moulded window reveals, and ashlar mullions.

The southwest (entrance) elevation is characterised by a three-stage tower centrally positioned within a re-entrant angle, rising above the eaves and flanked by an advanced gable to the left. The tower's front features a round-arched, keystoned entrance with a guilloche pattern inset with petal motifs, topped by a consoled cornice with a shaped gablet. A bipartite window is located to the southeast of the tower at ground level. The first stage of the tower features a bipartite window with a stepped hoodmould rising from a string course and encompassing a blank rectangular panel on both the southwest and southeast sides. The second stage of the tower has triangular-headed, tripartite windows to the southwest and southeast. The towerhead is marked by a bracketted eaves cornice, and topped with a tall, fish-scale French pavilion roof, complete with decorative cast-iron brattishing and a weathervane, and louvred timber lucarnes on each face. An advanced, segmental-arched tripartite window with cornice and blocking course is situated at ground level in the outer right bay. Above this is a bipartite window. The advanced gable to the left, incorporating a crow-stepped design and ball finial, contains a two-storey canted window with a pierced balustraded parapet, and a triangular-headed single window in the gablehead, complete with a hoodmould.

The northeast (rear) elevation is distinguished by a large, rectangular, full-length modern extension. A central shouldered gable is present, featuring an apex stack and two small windows within the gable.

The northwest elevation comprises four bays, with single windows in the left bays. A shouldered wallhead stack is located in the bay to the right of centre, and a single window sits at the first floor in the outer right bay.

The southeast elevation features four bays, with single windows at the first floor of the bays to the right and a bipartite window below. A shouldered wallhead stack is positioned to the bay left of centre, with a modern door located below.

The windows are timber sash and case with plate glass. The roof is slated, with lead flashings. Two corniced wallhead stacks are connected to the roof, alongside one apex stack as previously described. There is one Velux window to the southwest and two to the northwest.

The interior was not inspected in 1992.

Remnants of a high boundary wall with semi-circular coping remain to the front and along the southeast side, and a low rubble wall with saddleback coping is present to the front.
