Description
This is a villa dating to around 1875, built with a complex irregular design incorporating service wings, a pavilion block, and an entrance tower, all exhibiting Baronial detailing. The front (northeast) elevation is constructed from cream-coloured sandstone with a stugged ashlar finish and droved dressings, while the rear and sides are of squared and snecked stugged rubble. A base course, chamfered reveals, ashlar mullions, and crowstepped gables with thistle and fleur-de-lis finials are also present.
The northeast front is three bays wide, featuring a single-storey gabled pavilion on the right and a single-storey recessed service wing on the left. The central entrance tower rises three stages, with a stepped corbelled course, a rope-moulded door surround, a panelled door, a rectangular plate glass fanlight, and a stepped hoodmould above a blank panel featuring male and female masque stops. A shouldered-arch bipartite window sits at the second stage, and the top stage has a bipartite window and a corbelled battlemented parapet. An advanced bay to the left has a two-storey canted window corbelled to square in its gable, with a shouldered-arch window in the gablehead. To the right, a projecting tripartite window with a battlemented parapet at ground floor is accompanied by a bipartite window at first-floor level, above a pedimented timber dormer with a round-arched and keystoned window. The gabled pavilion has a secondary door, panelled with sidelights and a large fanlight, a stepped hoodmould with nailhead label stops, and a small round-arched light in the gablehead.
The southwest rear elevation comprises a flush, single-storey gabled end of the pavilion to the left and an advanced single-storey gabled end of the service wing to the right. It showcases a lean-to conservatory, a tall transomed Venetian stair window with narrow sidelights, and gabled bays containing single windows to the ground floor, first floor, and gablehead, along with bipartite windows. The pavilion to the left has two small single windows, and the wing to the right has a secondary door and a bipartite window at ground floor and a bipartite window in the gablehead. The southeast elevation is M-gabled with apex stacks. A central, pedimented timber dormer with a round-arched and keystoned window is present, alongside a single-storey side wing with a gabled bay to the right and single windows. A secondary entrance door is found on the return to the northeast. The northwest elevation is also M-gabled with apex stacks, incorporating a single-storey wing with a secondary door and two single windows, and a central truncated shouldered wallhead stack.
Most windows are timber sash and case with plate glass glazing, although some have four panes. The roof is slate with lead flashings. There are four apex stacks, one wallhead stack, and some octagonal cans. Corbelled skewputts, moulded eaves gutters, and gutterheads are also present. The interior was not inspected in 1992. Surrounding the property are a tall rubble boundary wall to the rear and sides with semi-circular coping, a low rubble wall to the front with saddleback coping, one carriage gate, and two pedestrian gates.
