Description

Oakdene is a villa dating to around 1894, originally a three-bay, two-story building that has since been divided into two flatted dwellings. The principal elevation exhibits Scots Baronial detailing. The front (south) elevation is constructed from bull-faced, heavily tooled, coursed, and snecked sandstone ashlar, while the sides and rear are of random sandstone rubble. A projecting, chamfered basecourse is present, along with smooth ashlar quoins, a moulded cornice, and crowstepped gables and dormers featuring moulded skewputts. Window margins are smooth ashlar with roll-moulded reveals on the main elevation.

The right-hand side of the south elevation features an advanced, crowstepped, gabled bay with jettied corners and a canted, four-light bay window at ground floor. Above the central windows is a simple rectangular banded cornice, with overhanging gabled corners above the sidelights. A bipartite window at the first floor has a cable-moulded string course, machicolated bartizans, corbels, and a stone ball finial. A central segmentally-pointed arched doorway is framed by a splayed architrave with a cable-moulded, pointed-arch hoodmould; a small rectangular window is positioned above the doorway. To the left is a bipartite ground floor window featuring a cable-moulded, stepped hoodmould incorporating a plain ashlar plaque centrally above the window; a gabled breaking-eaves hosts a crowstepped dormer above, topped with a ball finial. The left corner of the ground floor is rounded, with a shallow curved corbel at mid-height. A single-story lean-to garage is recessed to the far right.

The west elevation has a wide crowstepped gable, a door on the far left, and a first-floor window with a projecting cill. A later 20th-century, flat-roofed brick extension is situated further to the left. The north elevation includes a ground-floor window to the left and late 20th-century single-story brick extensions to the remaining ground floor. A tall, central, round-arched, leaded glass stair window is on the first floor.

The east elevation also has a wide crowstepped gable, a 20th-century rubble-built garage in the foreground, an external brick and concrete staircase leading to a late 20th-century, timber panelled doorway at first floor, off-centre right, and a window to the far right.

The windows are predominantly timber sash and case with horns, and the roof is pitched with grey slates. Corniced ashlar stacks and circular and octagonal clay cans are also present. The interior was not inspected in 2004.

The gatepiers are smooth, square-plan ashlar with projecting, splayed bases, rectangular-banded recesses to the heads, and piended caps. There are decorative wrought-iron gates with a floral design, and plain ball-finialled railings.
