Description

St Mary's Roman Catholic Church, located on Glasgow Road in Camelon, Falkirk, was designed by Gillespie Kidd and Coia and built between 1960 and 1961. The church and the attached presbytery feature a south-facing façade made of yellow firebrick with flat copper roofs. The church is rectangular in shape and has a low aisle to the west. At the north end, there is a deep wooden band at the eaves, adorned with a simple cross, and L-shaped glazed panels that provide lighting for the aisles. The entrance is framed by a blue panelled rectangle with strip glazing above. The sides of the church display irregular rectilinear glazing at the eaves level and along part of the walls below that level. On the east side, there are three pairs of confessionals housed in projecting brick boxes. The aisle features a narrow band of rectilinear glazing, and a copper dormer on the roof, topped with a cross, illuminates the altar.

Inside, the church has deep laminated beams that support the joists, with twin pillars separating the nave from the aisle. The nave consists of eight bays, and the yellow firebrick is treated similarly to the exterior. Pine pews are arranged over the baptistery. The presbytery, which is attached to the church, shares similar architectural details and features irregular rectangular glazing. The interior of the presbytery has not been seen.

The boundary walls consist of a low wall on two sides of the church and around the presbytery, also made of yellow firebrick to match the main buildings.
