Description
The Union Inn, located in Port Downie, Tamfourhill, Falkirk, dates from around 1822 and has undergone later alterations. This tall, three-storey, three-bay public house is designed in a Classical style and features a rounded stair tower with paired outshoots at the rear. It is prominently situated beside the Forth and Clyde Canal. The principal façade facing east is made of painted ashlar and has a rusticated base course and quoins. The gabled and rear sections are constructed of rubble, with the northern side painted. The front features an ashlar finish with a rusticated ground floor and quoin ends. There is also a later 20th-century toilet block and conservatory added to the south gable.
Inside, as observed in 2013, the bar area is timber panelled and has an L-plan layout with a corniced back bar. Decorative cast iron columns support the space. A rear stair leads to the first floor, which has plain interiors and some six-panel doors on the upper floors. The top floor has separate access via an internal stair at the rear.
