Description
The Eagle Inn, located at 126 Cowgate in Kirkintilloch, is an early 19th-century, two-storey, three-bay rectangular-plan former inn that once served the passenger transport trade of the Forth & Clyde Canal. A single-storey extension was added to the rear in the mid-20th century, built on the site of former stables. The building features painted ashlar on the east side, while the north, south, and west sides are constructed from coursed squared stugged rubble. Notable architectural details include a wide base course, an eaves course, stone cills, raised margins on the side windows, strip quoins, and droved rybats. The entrance is marked by a deep-set Doric pilastered doorpiece.
The principal elevation is symmetrical, with a central pilastered doorpiece leading up two steps to a late 20th-century door with a blocked fanlight. This entrance is flanked by large margin paned windows that have been enlarged, and there are three first-floor windows above.
On the north elevation, there is a ground floor window located off-centre to the left, with two small first-floor windows inserted later to the right of centre. A single-storey extension clad in bull-faced masonry is attached to the right, featuring a door and a window, while the original doorway to the former stable yard has been retained.
The rear elevation exhibits an advanced four-bay rendered ground floor extension with a flat roof, which includes a door on the far left and three windows to the right. The main original building has three evenly spaced first-floor windows.
The south elevation contains three unevenly spaced ground floor windows, two of which were inserted later, along with a basement door to the left that leads to a boiler room. A single-storey extension with a window is adjacent to the left, and there is a first-floor window to the right. A canal milestone inscribed with '19' was noted but not seen during the survey in 2003.
Inside, the building has been altered to create modern office accommodation, although some original window surrounds remain. The principal elevation features metal margin paned windows, while the original openings on the sides and rear contain 12-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is pitched and covered with graded grey slates, featuring straight ashlar skews, corniced ashlar gablehead stacks, and octagonal clay cans.
