Description
The police station on Townhead in Kirkintilloch is an earlier 20th-century building designed in the Arts and Crafts style. It is a two-storey structure with an irregular plan, situated on a corner site. The exterior is harled with polished sandstone dressings and features a deep base course along Townhead and an eaves course.
The west elevation, which serves as the entrance, has eight bays, including a chamfered angle bay. The entrance bay is advanced and gabled, featuring an architraved doorway with a stylised over-door and star-shaped windows on either side. Above the doorway, there is a round-headed pediment that contains a heraldic device over a first-floor window. The ground floor has broad segmental-arched windows in two bays to the left of the entrance, while the first-floor windows break the eaves in stone pedimented dormers. The remaining bays have single windows on both floors.
On the north elevation facing Luggiebank Road, the openings are of irregular size and arrangement. There is a gabled bay on the outer right with three single windows at the ground level.
The east elevation at the rear features an advanced gable on the outer right, a doorway in the centre, and a single-storey wing on the outer left. The ground floor includes some 16-pane timber sash and case windows, although many of the windows have been replaced with PVCu versions that have sandwiched astragals. The roof is covered with grey slate, and there is a wallhead stack at the rear, along with cast-iron rainwater goods, coped gables, and gableted skewputts.
The interior was not seen during the inspection in 1997.
