Description

Strowan Lodge is a villa dating from around 1830, located at 5 Morningside Place, Edinburgh. It is a two-storey and basement building with a rectangular plan, originally symmetrical, but later expanded with additional pavilions and extensions. The front of the building is constructed from cream-coloured polished ashlar sandstone, with a rock-faced basement. The rear and sides are of squared and snecked rubble stone. A cill band runs beneath the first-floor windows. Ground-floor windows are recessed within segmental arches, while first-floor windows have architraves. The eaves have a cornice and blocking course, and the corners are rusticated.

The front (south) elevation features a central open Roman Doric porch with steps, an ashlar parapet, triglyphs on the frieze, a dentilled cornice, and a blocking course bearing a tablet. A panelled door with a rectangular plate glass fanlight leads inside. A single window is located above the door on the first floor. Single windows are present to the ground and first floors of the outer bays. Single-storey, flat-roofed pavilions flank the main block; one has a recessed mansard roof, and the other has railings and a recessed flat-roofed storey. Modern additions have been made to the outer right and left.

A secondary entrance door, leading to the first floor, is on the rear (north) elevation, formerly a stair window, reached by steps with cast-iron railings and a panelled door with a plate glass fanlight. Single windows are situated on the ground and first floors of the outer bays, with an additional narrow window on the ground floor of the right bay. Later wings extend to the left and right, one with a mansard roof. A single-storey, square extension with a piend roof is found where the main house connects to the later wing on the right. A single-storey detached garage is located to the left. The east and west elevations have various additions and extensions, and central corniced wallhead stacks.

The windows are timber sash and case, with plate glass to the front, four-pane to the side wings, and twelve-pane to the rear. The roof is slated with metal flashings, and there are two wallhead stacks on the main house and three on the later wings.

The interior features a tiled vestibule and hall, notable for ornate cornices and hall columns with elaborate Corinthian capitals. A tall rubble boundary wall with flat ashlar coping encloses the property, to the north. An arched pedestrian gate, with a blocking course bearing a tablet, is set within the wall, flanked by square ashlar gatepiers with rounded arrises and moulded coping to the carriage gate.
