Description

St Andrew's Cottage, located at 15 Lauder Road in Edinburgh, dates back to 1852. This two-storey villa features Tudor gothic details and was originally designed in an L-plan, which has become irregular due to extensive additions at the rear and a service wing to the north. The building is constructed from squared and snecked sandstone rubble, accented with polished ashlar dressings.

The west elevation, which serves as the entrance, appears L-plan from the street. It includes a gabled stone porch set in the re-entrant angle, featuring a segmental-arched doorway with a hoodmould, a boarded door with decorative wrought-iron hinges, and a blinded slit in the porch gable topped with a stone finial. There is a single window with a hoodmould in the return of the porch. To the right, there are bipartite windows in a bay, also hoodmoulded at ground level. The outer left side has hoodmoulded bipartite windows in an advanced gabled bay, along with a slit window in the gablehead.

On the south elevation, there is a mansard-roofed addition to the outer right. The north elevation features a single-storey service wing at ground level, which is blank above.

The cottage has lying-pane sash and case windows and a grey slate pitched roof. It includes a corniced gablehead stack, a coped wallhead stack to the north, moulded cans, a stone ball-finial on the main gable, pointed coping on the gables, and bracketed skewputts.

The interior was not seen in 1990. The property is enclosed by high coped boundary walls along the street, which feature pedimented coping at the pedestrian gateway, as well as high coped rubble boundary walls.
