Description

Kersland Cottage, located at 13 Vennel Street in Stewarton, was built in 1855. This two-storey, three-bay villa features a largely rectangular plan and is designed in the Tudor-Gothic style. The entrance elevation is finished in painted ashlar, while the other sides are constructed from coursed, droved, squared, and snecked rubble, with ashlar margins and a cornice. The west elevation showcases Tudor-arched windows, some of which are bi-partite and have hoodmoulds.

The principal elevation includes an advanced gabled bay on the right, topped with a fleur-de-lys finial. This bay features a four-light canted bay window at the ground level and a corniced tripartite window above. There is a single-storey entrance porch in the re-entrant angle, which contains a deep-set four-panelled timber entrance door on the north side, adorned with a Tudor-arched fanlight above and a shield displaying the date 1855 on the west side.

The cottage predominantly features two-over-three lying pane timber sash and case windows on the principal elevation, while the other elevations have four-over-six pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are coped gables and wallhead stacks with octagonal cans, as well as stepped skews.

Inside, Kersland Cottage boasts a fine interior with many decorative features and the original room layout largely intact. A curved, dogleg staircase with decorative metal balusters and a timber banister with a curved end enhances the interior. There is also notable decorative plasterwork on the cornices and ceiling roses, a marble chimney piece with a horseshoe cast iron grate, timber shutters, four-panel doors, and some Tudor-arched openings.
