Description

The Library at 1 and 3 Avenue Street in Stewarton is an early 19th-century, two-storey, four by nine-bay Classical civic building. It includes public halls, a library, and a flat on the ground floor, with a two-storey, two-bay extension added to the east in 1981. The building is prominently located at the head of the town centre square and features droved, coursed sandstone with ashlar margins, while the 1981 extension is finished with concrete harl. Notable architectural elements include raised cills, a band course, and a cornice.

The principal elevation faces south and is symmetrical, featuring a central advanced two-bay section with a pediment and a clock at the apex. The first storey has keystoned, round-arched window openings. The west elevation consists of nine bays, with three bays on the right that have blind upper storeys. The top floor has round-arched openings, and the ground floor features segmental-headed windows set within recessed round-arched voussoired openings, along with a pedimented doorpiece. On the far left, there is a symmetrical five-bay section with a door that has round-arched moulding and flanking pairs of shaped voussoirs from former round-arched openings, which currently have rectangular windows added in 2008.

The glazing patterns vary, with an eight-pane metal glazing pattern on the ground floor and four-pane timber sash and case windows on the first storey. Some plate glass timber sash and case windows are present on the west side. The roof is covered with grey slates and has a piended design on the principal elevation.

The interior, partially seen in 2008, features a large hall with a stage, timber flooring, and timber panelling.
