Description
This building, located at 2, 4, and 6 Lainshaw Street in Stewarton, dates from around 1840 and underwent alterations in 1867. It is a two-storey, five-by-four-bay corner structure situated at Stewarton Cross, featuring a canted corner bay with a recessed two-leaf part-glazed timber door and a fanlight above. The building has a base course facing Vennel Street to the northeast, two moulded string courses between the storeys, and a moulded eaves course. The fenestration is regular, with moulded surrounds, some of which are scroll-bracketted. The surface is lined and rendered with painted margins.
On the northwest elevation facing Lainshaw Street, there is a pair of two-leaf timber panelled doors at the centre. The door to the left has a prominent architrave with plinthed pilasters and consoles that support a cornice with guttae. To the outer right, there is a plate glass shop window, and a cill course is present.
The northeast elevation facing Vennel Street features a symmetrical three-bay section on the right, with a central two-leaf timber door and a four-pane fanlight above. There is an additional two-bay section to the left.
The upper storey predominantly has timber plate glass windows, with some tilt and turn designs. The ground floor has replacement twelve-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slates and includes a corniced ridge stack, flat skews, and a large corniced stack on the southwest gable, which retains one hexagonal can.
Inside, as seen in 2008, there is a stone stair leading to the first floor, featuring a cast-iron barley twist balustrade and a painted timber handrail. Some simple cornices are also present.
