Description

The Reading Room at 26 Sturrock Street in Kilmarnock was built around 1885. It is a single-storey, classical rectangular hall featuring lower recessed entrance bays. The main front is made of channelled ashlar, which is now painted, while the wings are constructed from coursed stone with brick and stone on the sides and rear. There is a base and eaves course.

On the west elevation, the central feature is a keystoned Venetian window set in a square recess, with three panels below and panelled spandrels. Four stone steps lead up to a timber panelled entrance door located in front of the recessed flanking wings.

The north elevation includes a blind window with a projecting cill at the centre of the lower wing, which adjoins the side of the main structure at the rear. The south elevation is not visible as of 2001. The east elevation also features a blind window with a projecting cill at the centre of the lower wing, adjacent to the rear side of the main structure.

The building has a plate glass Venetian window and two-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is piended and covered with grey slate, featuring zinc flashing, and there are painted cast-iron rainwater goods.

Inside, the space has been refurbished for office use, but some original details such as cornicing and skirting boards remain.
