Description

12 Queen Street in Kilmarnock is an earlier 19th-century, two-storey corner shop with accommodation above. The building features red and white coursed sandstone rubble, which is stuccoed to resemble dressed ashlar blocks, and has dressed pale ashlar projecting sills. A cornice at the eaves supports a low pediment.

The principal elevation is essentially three bays wide. On the left side, there is a timber door with a painted rectangular glazed fanlight. To the far left, there is a wider tall window with a recessed panel below, and to the right of the door, there is a nearly double-width tall window also with a recessed panel below. The first floor has three regularly placed identical bays, topped with an eaves cornice and a low parapet.

The southeast corner elevation features a pair of identical tall windows on the ground floor, each with recessed panels under the sills, and two smaller matching windows on the first floor. The east elevation is a blind elevation with a single window on the first floor to the left, and it has a corniced low parapet on top.

The north and west elevations include a gable end that abuts 6 Queen Street and a property on the former Princes Street. The windows have later 4-pane glazing in the single bays and 10-pane fixed glazing in the shop windows, while the upper bays are blind with ventilation fans in the upper lights. The roof is piended with grey slate and features a bow corner, along with metal ridging and flashings, and cement flashing to the adjoining higher gable. There are shared high brick stacks with mismatched cans.

The interior has been altered from its original plan during the 20th century for various purposes.
