Description

10 Queen Street in Kilmarnock is a late 19th to early 20th century, two-storey, seven-bay retail building designed in a simplified Beaux-Arts style. The ground floor features modern retail units, while the first floor retains older style retail premises. The principal elevation is constructed from red Ballochmyle ashlar, with yellow brick used for the sides and rear. Notable architectural elements include a deep band course and an oversailing corbelled eaves course.

On the south elevation, the ground floor has later paired timber doors with ventilation louvres and glazed panels in the first bay. There are shops in bays two to four, with a door on the left and a window on the right, and a similar shop in bays five to six. To the extreme right, there is a timber panelled door and surround that leads to the first floor. The deep corniced band course features squared pilaster bases that support canted first-floor mullions, flush lintels, and a heavy eaves course that supports the corbelled oversailing cornice.

The west elevation adjoins a late 20th century retail building on King Street. The north elevation, which was not seen in 2001, is concealed by surrounding buildings. The east elevation adjoins No. 10 (formerly the Blue Iguana) and features a blind gable above with a central wallhead stack.

The ground floor has varying designs of modern shop windows and semi-glazed doors. The first floor has rectangular timber sash and case windows, featuring a two-pane larger lower light and a small upper light with a semi-circular detail. The roof is piended and platformed, covered with grey slate, and includes metal ridging, flashing, and valleys, along with a ventilator on the left side of the east roofline. The east elevation has replacement rainwater goods, while the gutters on the principal elevation are concealed by the eaves cornice. A tall yellow and white brick wallhead stack is located to the east, with stone neck copes and five octagonal cans.

Inside, the ground floor has been altered to create modern shop units, while the first floor features a high ceiling and a wrought-iron staircase, along with another staircase leading from the side of the ground floor.
