Description

John Knox Church, located on High Street in Stewarton, was built in 1841. This symmetrical, two-storey, three-bay church features a rectangular plan and a three-stage steeple above the entrance bay on the south side. The church is constructed from tooled, squared, and coursed sandstone on the south elevation, while the other sides are made of rubble. It has a base course, band course, cornice, and blocking course, along with some raised cills. There are later single-storey extensions at the rear.

The south elevation, which serves as the entrance, has a slightly advanced central bay with a pediment. This bay contains two leaf, six-panel timber entrance doors topped by a rectangular fanlight and a consoled cornice. The steeple features clasping Doric pilasters and round-arched louvred openings on the first stage, a clock stage above, and a finialled stone spire.

Inside, the church has a cohesive interior scheme with a panelled timber gallery on three sides, supported by slender cast iron columns. There are timber pews, and a pair of symmetrical, decoratively carved curved staircases lead up to a carved timber pulpit with an organ case situated behind it. The roof is shallow and piended, covered with grey slates. The windows are predominantly diamond leaded panes with decorative coloured glass borders and images.
