Description

St Ninian's Church, located at 144 St John's Road in Edinburgh, was built in 1844 and has undergone extensive additions and alterations since then. The church features squared, coursed sandstone with sandstone ashlar dressings around the openings. It has a base course, quoins, long and short surrounds, and predominantly lancet arch openings. Decorative elements include corbelled finials, gargoyles, a banded spire, and a weather-vane.

The south elevation, which serves as the entrance, has an advanced, buttressed gabled porch that includes a decorated nook-shafted doorway with two-leaf timber doors featuring decorative iron hinges. A patera is set in the gable above the entrance. The porch is centrally located within the nave and is flanked by single openings on both sides. There is a decorative string course at the springing of the arch and a rose window set in the gable. On either side of the entrance porch, there are single quatrefoil openings, with a single window at ground level to the left and a single-storey lean-to entrance to the right, which also has two-leaf timber doors and small arched openings aligned above. To the outer right, a stair-tower features a single stained glass opening at the first stage, a stepped string course at the second stage, and a tripartite window above, with columns flanked by a diminutive leaded centre light and blind flanking lights. There is a decorative band course and a single pointed arched louvred opening beneath the spire. The east transept and hall are located at the outer right, while the west transept and later 20th century additions are found on the outer left.

The interior was largely refurbished in 1953 and includes oak panelling in the chancel, timber pews, stained glass windows, and an open braced timber roof.

The boundary walls, gatepiers, and gates are made of coped, stepped rubble sandstone, with cast-iron gatepiers and gates.
