Description
26 Clermiston Road is a single-storey house with an attic, built in 1903, featuring an asymmetrical L-plan design with a longer wing on the right. The exterior is finished in whitewashed harl with red sandstone ashlar dressings, including a cill course, an advanced chamfered base course, overhanging bracketed timber eaves, projecting cills, and long and short surrounds to the openings.
On the west (entrance) elevation, there is a roll-moulded central doorway with a panelled timber door and a 12-pane fanlight, accompanied by a plaque to the right. A single light catslide dormer is present above. To the left, there is a 2-light window at ground level in an advanced bay, and a 2-light gabled dormer above. The right side features a 3-light canted bay window at ground level and a 2-light box dormer above.
The south elevation, facing Gordon Road, has five bays. The three advanced bays on the left include a central gabled bay with a transomed and mullioned stained glass stair window, flanked by single windows at ground level. A box dormer faces east. The recessed bay to the right has a single window to the outer left, an advanced timber porch to the left with a replacement 2-leaf door, and a single casement window to the outer right.
The house predominantly features timber sash and case windows with 6-, 9-, and 12-pane glazing in the upper sashes at ground level, and 9-pane glazing in the dormers. The roofs are covered with red tiles and have corniced gableheads and battered wallhead stacks with circular cans.
The interior was not seen in 1997.
The property includes low coped boundary walls, with a stepped higher squared and snecked rubble wall to the east that contains a postbox. There are also stepped low coped boundary walls and fencing with both pedestrian and vehicular entrances on the Clermiston Road elevation. An outhouse with a piended roof is painted timber and located to the east.
