Description

St John's Evangelical Church, built in 1840, is a plain and symmetrical church with a rectangular plan and three bays. Constructed from cream sandstone rubble, the south elevation features squared and coursed stonework, base and cill courses, round-headed openings with splayed reveals, and raised margins. The corners are accentuated by clasping buttresses, and the side elevations have corbelled eaves.

The south entrance elevation has a three-bay gable facade with a central doorpiece that includes a diamond-pane fanlight and boarded two-leaf doors. Low projecting walls frame the steps leading to the entrance, which ends in octagonal pillars. The entrance is flanked by windows, and above it is a group of three windows, with a taller window in the center and blind outer bays. A plaque above the entrance reads 'CONGREGATIONAL CHAPEL 1840', and there is a loop window above.

The east side elevation consists of three bays divided by strip pilasters, featuring a group of three windows in the center and windows in the outer bays. The west side elevation is a mirror image of the east wing. The north rear elevation is gabled and has two windows.

The church predominantly has a diamond-pane glazing pattern, with multi-pane fixed glazing in the north bay on each side elevation. The roof is covered with grey slate, and the gables have ashlar coped skews and buttresses, with stone apexes.

The interior was not seen in 1990. Surrounding the church is a low boundary wall made of sandstone rubble, with a squared sandstone octagonal pier to the left topped with an ashlar cap, and cast-iron railing to the left.
