Description
East Parish Church, located on Green Street in Strathaven, was built around 1820 and underwent a thorough renovation in 1877. The steeple, which is dated 1843, features a square-plan church set on a raised basement. The church has a prominent painted ashlar exterior and an advanced, five-stage tall tower with a spire at the south end.
The first stage of the tower is tall and has a blocked round-arched door with a round-arched window above it. The second stage features angle margins and paired round-arched windows, with the date "MDCCCXLIII" inscribed by the mason James Park. The third stage has angle pilasters that support finials and includes a single light. The fourth stage is octagonal, with margins and a clock on all four faces. The fifth stage has angle pilasters and louvred round-arched openings on alternating faces. The spire is faceted and topped with a weather vane.
On the south elevation, there are four tall round-arched windows flanking the tower, and three additional windows on the side elevations. The north entrance elevation has a band course above the basement door, which is accessed by a flight of steps, and a single window that rises into the gable. The roof is covered with piended slate. Inside, the church features a galleried interior.
The square-plan gatepiers have corniced caps and are accompanied by decorative cast iron railings.
