Description
St Michael's Church, located on St Michael's Street in Dumfries, was constructed between 1740 and 1746. The church tower, built in 1740-1742, features a spire that was contracted for in 1742 by Alexander Fleck and Thomas Twaddel, who also constructed the present church after the previous one was demolished. The church and tower are made of red sandstone with ashlar dressings and margins.
The tower has a square plan and consists of four undiminishing stages with rusticated openings. Simple pinnacles surround the base of a tall, facetted stone spire that rises to 50 feet and includes lucarnes, a gilded finial, and a weathercock. A vestibule was opened in 1827, and the main door was likely formed at that time.
The church itself has a rectangular plan and features key-blocked round-headed windows along with a leaded and slated roof that is both piended and platformed. The west-facing elevation has two tall lights flanking the tower, while the other elevations have two tiers of openings. The east wall includes two tall windows flanking the pulpit. Originally, the north and south flanks had doors in the outer bays, with 19th-century porches added to the doors nearest the tower. A vestry was added to the northeast in 1869 and enlarged in 1881. The church also has an eaves course and cornice.
Inside, the church is divided by two large stone arcades into a nave and aisles. The interior has undergone significant alterations, including re-seating in 1869 and renovations in 1881, during which timber galleries were renewed on three walls. The pulpit, located centrally on each wall, likely dates from 1881 but incorporates original back-board pilasters and a bell-cast sounding board. The organ was made by Willis of London, and the church contains stained glass windows and numerous memorial wall plaques. The bell, originally from 1451, was re-cast in 1818 and again in 1839 by Thomas Mears of London.
