Description
The Burns Mausoleum, located in St Michael's Churchyard in Dumfries, was designed by T F Hunt of London in 1815. This octagonal temple features a circular dome and has four shorter sides that are adorned with a projecting entablature supported by paired Ionic columns. On three of the longer sides, there are cast-iron gates or grills with glazing behind them, and above the entablature, there is an architraved semi-circular window. The fourth side is filled with a masonry panel that serves as a background for a marble alto relievo by Turnerelli, which is a replacement copy from 1936, signed by Hermon Cawthra. The mausoleum also includes a secondary cornice and a blocking course beneath the dome.
