Description
The former mortuary, attributed to James Barbour and built around 1897-98, is a two-storey, six-bay building with a roughly L-shaped plan, featuring Scots and Italian Renaissance detailing. It is primarily constructed of bull-faced red ashlar and has a stringcourse that separates the ground and first floors. The south side has an advanced lower canted block with a pierced parapet. The west elevation, which is the main front, includes a round arched recessed entrance, tripartite windows, and dormers with segmental and triangular pediments, topped with star and rose finials. There is a later lean-to porch that is partially glazed, along with a two-storey piended advanced section on the east (rear) elevation. The glazing is non-traditional, and the roof is covered with slate. The interior was last seen in 2014 and has undergone extensive alterations.
