Description
The Main Building of St Joseph's R.C. College, designed by architect Charles Hay of Dumfries in 1907, is a large college block with a rectangular plan and symmetrical elevations, showcasing a Northern European style with some Renaissance details. The building has three storeys and an attic, set above a basement, and is constructed of snecked bullfaced red ashlar with polished dressings.
On the southwest elevation, there is a tall central tower featuring a wide segmental-arched doorway with an architrave and a pierced parapet above. Above the doorway, there are two square or round-headed windows on each stage, and a niche at the third floor contains a sculptured figure. The tower culminates in a tall stage above the main eaves level, which includes a clock and a boldly projecting parapet walk that encloses a finialed pyramidal roof with pedimented dormers on the elevations.
Flanking the tower are six plain bays, each with 6-pane glazing, enhanced by tall dormers with steep-pitched, swept-eaved roofs that are also finialed. Additional features include a first-floor cill course, a cornice, paired end stacks linked by pierced balustrades, and slate roofs, with the main roof featuring a leaded platform behind cast-iron brattishing. The northeast elevation has stair windows in a gabled tall central bay, with flanking bays also featuring dormers. To the right, there is a low flat-roofed range constructed of bull-faced red ashlar.
