Description

St Joseph's Roman Catholic College Chapel, designed by Charles J Menart of Glasgow, was built in 1923. This Romanesque chapel features a cruciform plan with aisles and a higher chancel topped by a gabled cross-ridge roof and a curved apse. A square tower is located at the liturgical west gable. The exterior is constructed of snecked bull-faced red ashlar with polished dressings, and it has round-headed openings throughout, including the main door at the foot of the tower, which has columned jambs with scalloped capitals. The tower has curved corners, a louvred bipartite belfry stage, and a corbelled parapet that encloses an elongated and pointed circular dome topped with a cross finial. The nave consists of four bays at the clerestory and three-bay aisles, while the chancel features gables with three-light windows set below relieving arches. Inside, there is a First World War memorial plaque and a crucifix set into the apse. The roofs are slated. The interior includes round-headed chancel and transept arches, as well as aisle arcades. A gallery with an oak front supports organ tubes. The altar rail, made of marble and cast iron, has been cut through, and there is a modern altar in the crossing nearby. The original gothic altar, located within the chancel and dated 29th October 1903, is large and elaborate, featuring pinnacled canopies and marbled timber. The chapel also has leaded glass windows. To the west of the main door, there is a free-standing battered circular red ashlar lamp with a wrought-iron lantern.
