Description
St Joseph's Chapel is a Roman Catholic church built in 1870. It is constructed from coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings and features steep pitched slate roofs. The building is designed in the Gothic Revival style and is situated on a sloping site, with basement rooms located under the west end. The layout includes an apsidal nave with a side corridor, a transept, a chapel, and a west porch, all positioned on the south side.
The exterior showcases a chamfered plinth and string courses, along with coped gables. The apse features three lancet windows with linked hoodmoulds, while the nave has a buttressed south side with four lancets. The north side includes two buttresses to the east and four lancets arranged in pairs. Below these, on the west side, are cross casement windows and a door. The west gable is adorned with a triple lancet window and is topped with a shouldered gabled single bellcote featuring a cross. The side corridor contains seven slit windows, the transept has a two-light pointed arch window, and the chapel has three slit lights. The porch, which is angle buttressed, has a cove moulded doorway with a hoodmould and engaged shafts.
Inside, the chapel has a plaster vault with wooden ribs and a continuous string course. The east end is highlighted by a painted and gilt stone reredos featuring crested blind arcading, a central tabernacle, and flanking buttresses with figures, all topped with spires. There is a matching altar, an aumbry to the south, and a piscina to the right. The west end includes a central recess and a panelled gallery with stairs to the south, while the sides feature doorways and figure niches.
