Description
The former Walkley Ebenezer Methodist Church is an 1890 building designed by WJ Taylor, constructed of coursed rock-faced stone with ashlar dressings and a Welsh slate roof. It is built in an Italianate style.
The exterior comprises two storeys and a 3x6 bay arrangement. It features a plinth with a chamfered ashlar band, moulded impost and first-floor sillbands. Bays are defined by giant pilasters on ashlar bases rising to a dentilled eaves band, a moulded cornice with a blocking course, and corner dies with ball-in-cup finials. The recessed central bay, containing three windows, is topped by a pediment with a console cornice and ball-in-cup finials. A trefoil opening is located in the tympanum, accompanied by a band inscribed "A D 1890 EBENEZER". The central bay holds a triple round-arched window with pilaster jambs, flanked by single segment-headed windows. Steps lead to paired segment-headed 6-panel double doors, above which is an ashlar band inscribed "PRIMITIVE METHODIST". Single windows are positioned on either side, all featuring keyed hoodmoulds, corbelled sills, and margin light glazing. Returns have a projecting front bay with single windows on each floor, matching the front elevation. The main body of the building has dentilled eaves, a coped parapet, and a gable stack. Five bays, again defined by giant pilasters, accommodate round-arched plain sash windows above and smaller segment-headed sashes below, all with corbelled sills and keystones.
The interior contains a gallery on all four sides, supported by columns with Corinthian capitals, featuring canted corners and a panelled front with decorative iron grilles. Moulded ceiling panels are present. A front platform incorporates a panelled pulpit flanked by stairs with decorative iron balustrades. The handrail continues as the altar rail, also carried on iron columns with flowers in the spandrels. An organ, installed in 1894 and housed in a panelled Gothic case, is flanked by stained glass windows. Pitched-pine benches and panelled doors are found throughout. An octagonal stone font sits atop a pedestal.
