Description
Loxley College Walkley Centre is a national school that has been converted into a further education college. It was built in 1871, with later 19th-century additions and mid-20th-century alterations. The building is possibly designed by JG Weightman, who also designed the nearby Church of St Mary in 1869. It features rock-faced stone with ashlar dressings and slate roofs, characterized by coped gables, a single ridge stack, and a conical ventilator, all in the Gothic Revival style.
The structure is single storey and has an H-plan layout with an eight-window range. The windows are adorned with stone mullions. The symmetrical front has a central gable with a large external coped stack and a square plaque flanked by blank panels, with string courses above and below. On either side of the central gable are Tudor arched three-light windows, accompanied by single Tudor arched cross casements. The lower parts of these windows are obscured by a single-storey lean-to addition that has a coped parapet and five 20th-century casements.
The gabled flanking wings each feature a Tudor arched three-light cross-mullioned window, with a pointed arched recess above containing a triangular ventilator. The left gable has a 20th-century box dormer on either side, with their inner sides leading to a porch that has a chamfered pointed arched doorway and a hoodmould. The right side of the building, facing Fir Street, has a central truncated external stack and a plaque naming the vicar and churchwardens, along with two Tudor arched cross casements to the right and a similar window followed by a door to the left. The interior has not been inspected.
