Description

This is a large house, dating from 1871, and later altered in the late 20th century. It is now a school, having previously served as a radio station. The building is constructed of coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings, and has steep-pitched slate roofs with three gable and one valley stack, mostly with multiple coped flues. It is designed in a Gothic Revival style.

The exterior features a plinth, string courses, and coped gables. The two-storey building has five windows across the front. The double-gabled entrance front has a recessed central single-light window with a traceried balustrade above, and a balustraded balcony below. The left gable has a corbelled external stack, and the right gable contains a three-light stone mullioned casement window, with a single-light window above it. A central moulded segmental pointed doorway has a double door and overlight. To the right of the doorway, a four-light mullioned window, and further right, a set-back gabled rear wing fronted by a canted single-storey projection with a parapet and hipped roof.

The south-west front has a central three-light mullioned window, with a single-light window above it. On either side, a gable with a two-storey canted bay window, with a traceried balustrade and three lights on each floor. To the right, a taller canted bay window with a traceried balustrade and three two-light mullioned windows on each floor. To the left, a projecting square crenellated tower, three stages high, with a corbel table and gargoyles. The tower's oriel window has a traceried balustrade, above which is a lancet opening with a datestone in the tympanum and a two-light mullioned window. Below the lancet are two two-light mullioned windows.

Inside, a dogleg cantilever wooden stair has an ornate cast-iron balustrade and a ramped scrolled handrail. Ground floor rooms are characterised by moulded cornices, and one room has a strapwork ceiling.
