Description

Sheffield High School for Girls is a house built around 1875, now part of the school. It features mid-20th century additions and is designed in the Tudor Revival style. The exterior is made of rock-faced stone with ashlar dressings and has slate roofs with various chimney stacks.

The building has a plinth, quoins, a first-floor sill band, and coped gables. It stands three storeys tall with a two-by-two window arrangement. The entrance front includes a gable on the right with a two-storey canted bay window that has a roofed balcony above. The lower floors feature a two-light stone mullioned cross casement window flanked by single light windows. The pent-roofed balcony has three shouldered openings with pierced balustrades, and the gables end in pedestals topped with ball finials. Above the balcony is a triangular four-light window with stone mullions.

To the left of the entrance bay, there is a deep machicolated and crenellated parapet. The upper floors have a stone mullioned cross casement window flanked by single light windows. Below this, there is a chamfered flat-headed doorway with a recessed half-glazed Tudor arched door and a mullioned overlight. A small single window is located to its left. The right return features a large external side wall stack.

On the garden front, there are two gables flanked by pedestals with ball finials. To the left, a square two-storey bay window has a crenellated parapet and a three-light stone mullioned cross casement on each floor. Above this, in the gable, is a three-light stone mullioned window with a moulded surround and stepped head. To the right, there is a canted two-storey bay window with a crenellated parapet and a stone mullioned cross casement on each floor, flanked by single light windows. Above this bay window is a two-light stone mullioned window. The right gable has an external stack, with single light windows on the lower floors and a single window to the left above. The interior has not been inspected.
