Description
Walkley Public Library is a public library built in 1904, with some alterations made in the mid-20th century. Designed by Hemsoll & Patterson, it features rock-faced stone with ashlar dressings and has gabled and hipped slate roofs, showcasing a Tudor Revival style. The building sits on a corner site and has an angled entrance bay.
The entrance bay is highlighted by a parapeted shouldered gable with ramped corner buttresses. It includes a central three-light stone mullioned window with an inscribed panel above, flanked by round-arched panels with oval cartouches. Below this, there is a flat-roofed segmental portico supported by six Ionic columns and an entablature, with curved stone steps leading up to a splayed entrance that has recessed panelled double doors. On either side of the entrance, there are two-light stone mullioned windows between the outer pairs of columns.
Each return of the entrance bay features two three-light stone mullioned cross casements with a cornice. Towards the entrance, there is a flat-roofed octagonal bay window with three stone mullioned cross casements. At the outer end of the building, a projecting shouldered gable contains a canted stone bay window with a stone mullioned cross casement and transomed flanking lights.
Inside, the library has segmental arches and shaped wooden brackets supporting the roof, along with mid-20th century bookcases.
