Description

Former St Joseph's School is a Roman Catholic school, now serving as architects' offices. It was built in 1889 and underwent conversion and restoration in 1990. The building features coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings and steep pitched plain tile roofs, which include two large gables and two side wall stacks, all of which are coped, along with two gabled louvred ventilators. It is designed in the Renaissance Revival style and has an H-plan layout.

The exterior includes a ground floor sillband and coped gables. The structure is single storey plus basement and has a six-window range. The windows are primarily stone mullioned cross casements with glazing bars. The central bay features a broken segmental pediment with a pedimented dormer that contains a niche and figure. Below this, there is a porch with a shouldered coped gable and a chamfered stone doorcase with a cornice on brackets, leading to a panelled double door. Above the door, there is a dated panel. The entrance is accessed by steps with ramped coped balustrade walls, and there are small windows in each return. Beyond these, on either side, are two-light windows. The side bays have a large through-eaves dormer with a four-light window, and under the right window, there is a two-light basement window. The wings feature shouldered round topped gables containing oval glazing bar windows with hoodmoulds, below which are four-light windows with cornices on brackets. The right wing has a smaller four-light basement window, while the left return has four two-light casements.

Inside, the building has a central hall with a plaster groin vault, divided by original glazed wooden screens.
