Description
The former headmaster's house and dormitory block at St Joseph's School, built in 1861, is a notable example of Gothic Revival architecture. Constructed from red brick with yellow brick and stone dressings, it features hipped slate roofs, some of which are patterned. The building is designed in an L-shape and consists of two to three storeys with three bays.
The south front has an off-centre projection that includes a canted bay window with traceried lights and a parapet. Above this bay window is a three-light window with stone mullions. In the right return angle, there is a three-storey square tower with an angle buttress and a square spire topped with a finial. The entrance features a segmental pointed doorcase with a hoodmould and shafts, with a window above it. Above this, there is an inscribed datestone from 1861, also with a hoodmould. To the right, a flat-headed three-light window with pointed arched lights is situated above a two-light mullioned window.
The west front includes a central wing with a canted bay window, while the east side has buttresses and three two-light pointed arched windows, with the central window altered to form a door. Above these windows are three mullioned windows, and above again, a central two-light pointed arched window beneath a bargeboarded gable, flanked by single mullioned windows. In the right return angle, there is a polygonal stair turret featuring a pointed arched doorway and slit lights, topped with an octagonal spire.
The dormitory block, which consists of three bays, has buttresses and features two-light pointed arched windows on the lower level, with mullioned windows on each floor above.
Inside, the building boasts an open well stair with landings and a wrought-iron balustrade featuring foliage designs. The dormitory block contains an open well cantilever spiral staircase with stick balusters and a ramped handrail.
