Description

The tower and sections of the Close wall bordering the grounds of Number 5 Pottergate date from 1285 to 1327. They are constructed of coursed squared stone and ashlar, featuring a gabled tile coping on the western section. The multangular tower stands approximately 5.5 meters high and is topped with a crenellated parapet, which includes a crosslet on each side. To the southeast, there is a wall about 15 meters long, also with a crenellated parapet and one crosslet. To the west, a wall approximately 25 meters long features a boarded door under a stone lintel. Timber samples taken from the tower suggest that the trees were felled between 1249 and 1284. This structure is designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument, County No. 114.
