Crookes Valley Methodist Church And School And Boundary Wall

This is a Methodist church and school, built in 1880 and altered around 1980. It now houses a training project. The building is constructed of coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings, and has steep-pitched slate roofs. It is designed in the Gothic Revival style.

The church is situated on a sloping site, with basement rooms underneath and the school at a lower level to the east. The main church consists of a nave with aisles, and an east wing with business rooms, transepts, and west porches. The west gable features a pair of lancets above a round window, and a central lean-to porch with a moulded pointed doorway. A taller gabled stair turret is located on the right return. The east wing has a north front with a central triple mullioned window, flanked by a 3-light cross casement and a 2-light mullioned window. The transepts each have two pairs of round-headed lancets, above which are traceried wheel windows. The schoolroom, to the southeast, has four 3-light cross mullioned windows.

Inside, the church was divided and refitted around 1980. Outside, a curved boundary wall runs along the west end, constructed with chamfered coping and two chamfered piers capped with octagonal pyramidal features, along with a pair of iron gates.
