Description
The north-west ward range at St George's Hospital, formerly known as the Borough Fever Hospital, was built between 1876 and 1882 by SL Swann and features mid-20th century alterations. The building is constructed of red brick with blue brick, moulded brick, and ashlar dressings, and is designed in the Gothic Revival style.
The exterior includes a plinth, string courses, sill and impost bands, and a moulded brick cornice. It is two storeys high with a total of 14 windows. At the time of the survey, many ground floor windows were boarded up. The structure consists of two Y-plan blocks that are connected at their inner ends by a mid-20th century brick link building, which has two casements above and a full-width glazed canopy below that covers various windows and doors.
Each block features three stone mullioned cross casements flanked by single light transomed windows, all with segmental heads. The lower sections have similar fenestration with segmental pointed polychrome heads and panel tracery. At the inner ends, there is a canted two-storey staircase tower with a balustrade and a large stack, as well as three shouldered segmental pointed windows with polychrome heads and blocked round windows above. The left block does not have a tower, and the corresponding bay has irregular 20th-century fenestration.
At the centre of the inner ends, there is a large dormer with a slated roof, a coped gable, and a pointed arched window. The outer ends feature splayed projecting bays with a segment-headed transomed window above and a similar window with a segmental pointed head and panel tracery below. Each return angle has two similar windows on each floor, and at the left end, one window has been modified to serve as a fire escape. Between the splayed bays, there is a segment-headed three-light mullion window with a transom, and below it, a pointed arched window. The interior was not inspected, and the building was vacant at the time of the survey.
