Description
Aldermanhill House, located at St Joseph's R.C. College on Craigs Road in Dumfries, is a villa built in the first half of the 19th century, possibly not all constructed at the same time.
This two-storey, three-bay villa features broad-eaved, piended recessed low symmetrical wings dating from around 1820. The northwest elevation is finished in painted ashlar with contrasting dressings. The inner bay is slightly advanced and has a pediment, supported by a heavy porch with Doric columns. The entrance includes a panelled door with a fanlight and sidelights, while the flanking windows are corniced tripartites with pilastered jambs and mullions. The first-floor windows are architraved and have a string course at the cill level. The sash windows feature a 12-pane glazing pattern on the first floor, and there is a main cornice. Urns are placed over the pediment and on the heavy skew ends, with corniced end stacks. Each wing has a single window facing northwest and a central stack, heightened in brick, over each southeast wallhead. The roof is covered with slate.
The house is set within a triangular garden, enclosed by ashlar-coped rubble-built walls. There is a corniced and rusticated pedestrian gateway leading to Aldermanhill Road, stables located to the northeast, and two rusticated square gatepiers.
