Description
The gatepiers at St Joseph's College in Dumfries were likely designed by Walter Newall around 1820, with heavy finialed urns possibly added around 1907. The structure features gatepiers with a carriage gate situated between them, flanked by concave tall quadrants that connect to the outer piers. There is a fifth pier to the west of the pedestrian gate. The gatepiers are made of polished red ashlar and are all octagonal in shape, topped with corniced caps and urns on the two inner piers. The decorative cast-iron gates are reinforced with steel plates.
