Description
The Queensberry Hotel, located at 16 English Street in Dumfries, was designed by James Barbour around 1880. This three-storey building showcases a richly sculptured free Italianate style. It features a red ashlar façade with a modern polished granite ground floor, topped by a modillioned cornice. The building has four bays, with three bipartite windows and one single window. The first-floor window heads are arcaded, adorned with high relief figure sculptures within tympana, and flanked by richly sculptured pilasters and pilastered mullions. The second floor also displays richly sculptured pilasters that support the main entablature, which is crowned by a modillioned cornice. The windows throughout are single-pane sashes, and the building has end stacks and a slate roof.
