Description

The Doric Temple is an ornamental structure built around 1745 by Henry Flitcroft for Thomas Watson Wentworth. It is made of sandstone ashlar and features an open-sided octagonal design topped with a vaulted dome in the Doric style. Each of the eight sides has three nosed steps set between square bases of attached columns, which display four bands of stalactite rustication. There is a round-arched opening on each side, complete with a moulded plinth, impost, and archivolt, featuring a console-shaped keystone. The cornice projects over the columns to support ball finials, although two of these are missing. The dome is made of ashlar and has stepped lower courses.

Inside, the temple has radial paving with an octagonal central stone. The impost and archivolt can be seen on the inside of the arches, and there is a cornice beneath the vault. This structure is a well-preserved and significant landscape feature within the park.
