Description

SK39NE WENTWORTH WENTWORTH WOODHOUSE

4/118 South Terrace retaining wall including parapet 29.3.68 and gateway (formerly listed as South Terrace )

GV II

Retaining wall with parapet and gateway. Commenced c1735 by Ralph Tunnicliffe for Thomas Watson Wentworth, some later rebuilding. Coursed, squared sandstone; dressed sandstone buttresses. Retaining wall extends from behind the south tower of Wentworth Woodhouse (east front) to bastion at SK39539750. Returns westwards, with central bay in shallow projection, to another bay projection opposite the Ionic Temple (q.v.). Continues for short distance as freestanding wall with carriage entrance flanked by side gates. Buttresses set at approximately 18 metre intervals on south-facing part. Bastion has wall sundial by J. Metcalfe dated 1767 (gnomon missing); half-round band beneath parapet. Weathered copings. East-facing section is steeply battered and without buttresses.

Said to be inspired by Lord Carlisle's terrace at Castle Howard.
