Description
Whitebank, located at 41, 42, and 43 Ashton Road in Gourock, is a flatted villa built in the earlier to mid 19th century. This two-storey and attic structure features five bays and quadrant corner bays. The exterior is made of painted sandstone, with ashlar on the front, stugged ashlar on the sides, and coursed and squared rubble at the rear. It has a base course, raised margins, and an eaves cornice.
On the north (front) elevation, there is a pilastered doorway at the center, which has a blocking course bearing a tablet, a deep-set panelled door, and a two-pane fanlight. A blind window is present on the first floor. The flanking bays have regular fenestration with moulded reveals, and the ground floor windows are corniced with bracketed cills. The curved outer corner bays each have a window on both floors, with a blocking course above that sweeps up into the gable skews. There are also four later dormers.
The east (Victoria Road) elevation is gabled and has three bays. It features a pilastered doorway at the center with a blocking course bearing a tablet and a single window above, along with single windows to the left, although the first-floor window on the left is blocked.
The south (rear) elevation includes a rubble-built stair that provides access to first-floor doorways, along with single windows. There are modern dormers present.
The west elevation is gabled and has single windows in the center bays. Some of the windows are 12-pane timber sash and case with thin astragals, but many have been replaced. The roof is slate, featuring two coped gablehead stacks on the east and west sides with octagonal cans.
The interior was not seen in 1993.
